The top 10 insurance companies in the world

AXA, a French multinational company, topped the list of the top 10 insurance companies in the world at the moment, according to the Trending Top Most website.

Two American companies occupied two places on the list: Berkshire Hathaway in fourth place, and United Health Group in sixth place.

Despite the long history of the American International Insurance Group (AIG), which was founded in 1919, it did not obtain any position in the top ten.

AIG has more than 64,000 employees worldwide, and has more than 88 million customers in more than 130 countries in the world.

For many decades, the company remained the largest insurance company in the world, but it was exposed to a major financial crisis in 2008, and was about to close its doors, but the federal government granted it huge financial aid amounting to $85 billion in September of that year.

Under this assistance, the US government now owns about 80% of the company’s shares. It has recovered with the help of the Federal Reserve and is now operating successfully, but it has dropped out of the list of the top 10 insurance companies in the world.

10- Allianz

A German company headquartered in Munich, founded in 1890, the company provides its services to customers in more than 70 countries, and the value of its assets under management amounts to 1.8 billion euros, and according to Forbes magazine, its total revenues amounted to 125.2 billion euros in 2015.

9- Japan Post Holding

A company owned by the Japanese government, it has 4 main divisions, including “Japan Post Service” for postal services, and “Japan Post Insurance” for insurance, and the insurance sector benefits from post offices throughout Japan.

The group’s profits amounted to $3.84 billion in the period between April 2015 and December of the same year.

8- Assicurazioni Generali

It is the largest insurance company in Italy, founded in 1831, with branches in more than 60 countries. It focuses mainly on the life insurance sector, and also provides various services for property insurance and coverage of commercial and industrial risks.
It employs 77,000 employees, has 65 million customers worldwide, has assets under management of 480 billion euros, and is one of the 50 largest companies in the world.

7- Munich Re Group

The group operates in 30 countries, mainly focusing on Asia and Europe. Founded in 1880, it has 45,000 employees worldwide.

The group provides various insurance services, including life, health, corporate and property insurance, and its profits reached 3.1 billion euros in 2015.

6- United Health Group

An American company that tops the list of diversified health care companies in the United States, providing its services to more than 85 million people in the United States and 125 countries, and its revenues reached $157.1 billion in 2015.

5- Prudential plc

Founded in London in 1848, the group includes several companies, including “The Prudential Corporation Asia” and “M&G Investments.” The company operates in 12 Asian markets, and is the third largest life insurance company in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

It employs approximately 22,308 thousand employees worldwide, and has assets under management worth $597.69 billion.

4- Berkshire Hathaway

An American multinational company headed by Warren Buffett, who has made it one of the largest companies in the world. In addition to insurance, the company operates in several other sectors such as transportation, finance, energy, manufacturing, and retail.

It owns several companies, including GEICO, Helzberg Diamonds, and FlightSafety International.

3- China Life Insurance

Known as “LFC”, it is one of the largest life insurance companies in mainland China. Its founding dates back to 1949 when the “PICC” group was established, but it separated from the group in 1996.

LFC now has 7 subsidiaries, which are listed on the New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges.

2- Zurich Insurance Group

It is the largest insurance company in Switzerland. It was founded in 1872, and has branches in more than 170 countries. The number of its employees is more than 55 thousand employees, and it is a company listed on the Swiss SIX Stock Exchange.

The company provides insurance facilities to individuals, small, medium and large companies, and even multinational companies, with total revenues reaching $60.568 billion in 2015.

1- AXA

It came in first place, a French multinational company with more than 102 million customers in 56 countries, with 157,000 employees.

Its founding dates back to the year 1817, when several different insurance companies merged to create “Acanthi” which was present in many places such as Africa, North America, Central and South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

AXA consists of a group of companies that operate independently under the laws of several countries, and is listed on the Euro Stoxx 50 index. The group’s total revenues reached €99 billion in the 2015 financial year.
